John Bevere - The Key to Success
TOPICS: Success

I’ve been around the church, and I’ve traveled all over the world, so I see things from a bird’s-eye view. I have seen leaders and people in the church who remain teachable and humble, and you know what? They continue to grow. But I’ve also observed leaders in the church who lack vision, and as a result, the church doesn’t go anywhere. What I’ve noticed, no matter where we are—whether in the marketplace, in healthcare, or in education—is that we must stay humble and keep a vision. There’s something about spending time with God that instills vision within you. The Bible says, «Counsel in the heart of a man is deep waters, but a man or woman of understanding draws it out.»

That’s Proverbs chapter 20, verse 5. Counsel in the heart of a man is indeed deep waters, but a man or woman of understanding draws it out. To me, this is very interesting; the person of understanding knows how to draw out the counsel of God. What are counselors for? When I need help and guidance, I’m in a situation where I’m really struggling. What do counselors do? They advise me on what to do next. Well, did you know there is counsel from the Lord? He is called the Spirit of Counsel. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Might, the Spirit of Knowledge, the Spirit of Understanding, and the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord.

These are one of the sevenfold aspects of the Holy Spirit. He is the Spirit of Counsel, and do you know how many times I’ve encountered situations and said, «God, I need counsel. I need to know what to do right now»? This is why I emphasize the Holy Spirit. The Bible states that Jesus said, «Out of our belly shall flow rivers of living water.» What are the aspects of those rivers? One of the rivers is counsel, understanding, and wisdom. This He spoke of the Spirit that they would receive. Are you following this?

He who speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to men; he speaks to God. However, in the Spirit, he speaks mysteries. That doesn’t mean mysteries as in secrets; it means hidden counsel, hidden wisdom, and hidden understanding. God doesn’t hide things from people; He hides things for His elect. So, He’s not hiding things from us; He’s hiding things for us. That’s why it’s the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings, for we are kings and priests—the glory of Christians—to search out a matter.
