This is day number 17 of our 40 days of power. 2 Samuel 5:20. So David went to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there, and he said, «The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking through of water.»
Therefore, he called the name of that place Baal-perazim. Baal-perazim simply means Lord of the breakthrough. And that’s how David referred to the Lord after this battle with the Philistines. This was the first battle that David fought after he had been made king over Israel. After he had been anointed, the Philistines attacked him. They attacked him after he was anointed as king over Israel. The interesting thing is that for years David had lived in Philistine territory after Saul started pursuing him. While he lived in Philistine territory, rarely did the Philistines attack David. But the moment they heard he had been anointed king of Israel, they attacked him.
The lesson is that God’s anointing upon your life will attract attacks. When people come to know that God has favored you, that He has anointed you, and that He is going to do something great in your life, there will be attacks. Don’t be surprised during this time of prayer and consecration as you wait on the Lord; there will be attacks in your life. But you will break through these attacks. That’s what David teaches us. He was anointed; the attack came, and he broke through the attack.
This particular attack was surprising because the Philistines arrayed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim, and David retreated into a stronghold, into a defensive position. Instead of attacking, he defended himself and then inquired of the Lord. He asked the Lord, «Should I really get involved in this battle?» And the Lord said, «Yes, go ahead, and I will be with you. I will be with you.» That was very important — «I will be with you.» Go ahead, and you will have the victory.
So David went out to meet the Philistines in the Valley of Rephaim. And as his testimony reveals, God gave him the breakthrough. He broke through them like the breaking of water. In other words, he ran through the enemy defenses and routed them in a very short time. David came out from that battle with a knowledge of God, with an understanding of God. And that understanding we can apply to our lives: that yes, when God anoints us for something, the enemy will attack.
The enemy may attack and put us in a defensive position. But if God sends us into the battle, He will not send us into the battle to suffer defeat. The Lord is the Lord of the breakthrough. No matter how formidable the enemy gathers against you, there is a breakthrough coming your way. So in this battle, David discovered God as the Lord of the breakthrough. What does it mean when we say He is the Lord of the breakthrough?
First, it means that He controls all aspects of the breakthrough process. Everything that is required to bring you a breakthrough in a situation, God is the Lord of it. He controls it.
Secondly, it means that He has plans for your breakthrough. God plans your breakthrough. He has a strategy for your breakthrough. You may not know how, you may not know when, but He has a strategy for your breakthrough. Why? He is the Lord of the breakthrough.
And third, not only does He plan the breakthrough, but He also executes the breakthrough. He brings it to pass. So God has the ability to plan the breakthrough and execute the breakthrough because He controls all the processes for your breakthrough. Why? He is the Lord of your breakthrough. And this week, may you experience the Lord of the breakthrough. May He bring you out from the defensive into the attack. And may He give you victory in every battle arrayed against you because of the anointing that is upon you. The Lord of the breakthrough will break through for you.
Let us pray. Say with me, «Heavenly Father, You are the Lord of the breakthrough. Let Your power shatter every evil force around me in Jesus' name. Amen.»
