Mensa Otabil - The Lord Deserves Our Praise

Mensa Otabil - The Lord Deserves Our Praise
TOPICS: Word to Go, Praise

As you know, this week we are focusing on Thanksgiving and on praise. God has led us through a successful 40 days of power. As we’ve waited on Him, we are now expecting His greater works to be done in our lives.

Psalm 150:1 and 2: Praise the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary. Praise Him in His mighty firmament. Praise Him for His mighty acts. Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Well, most of us are familiar with Psalm 150 because it’s the last psalm, and it celebrates God and calls all of us to praise the Lord. So, there are four things that we see in these two verses of Psalm 150, and four calls for us to praise the Lord.

First, we must praise Him in His sanctuary. That means praising God where He dwells, in His abode. Ultimately, that is what we call heaven. But it also means that the house dedicated to His worship; in the Old Testament, it was the temple and the tabernacle. In our time, we have chapels, we have churches, and our bodies are also the temple of God.

So, wherever God dwells, wherever we recognize as God’s dwelling place with other believers gathered, we can worship God and praise Him. That’s why it’s good to gather with other believers in church and to praise the Lord. You can do it by yourself, but praise Him in the sanctuary amongst the congregation of the righteous.

The second thing the psalmist tells us to do when we’re praising God is to praise Him in His mighty firmament. The firmament is part of God’s creation. It’s referenced in Genesis chapter 1 that God created the firmament. Normally, the firmament also talks about the heavenly bodies, or the sun, the moon, the stars, the planetary systems, and all the other parts of the universe.

Here, the psalmist says we must praise God throughout all the universe, in the planets, in space. So, wherever you find yourself, if you go to space, you are not exempt from praising God. If you go to the moon, you must praise God. If you one day happen to live on Mars, we will praise God. If we happen to live beyond our solar system, we’ll praise God because we praise Him in His mighty firmament, in the vast expanse that He has created. We praise God in that place also.

Then the third thing the psalmist tells us to do is praise Him for His mighty works. The mighty works of God are the things He has created-all of creation. But it’s not only about the things He has created, but the things He has done, continues to do, and will do. So, the works of God that He has done for you, the works of God that He has done for other people, the works of God that we read in the Bible, the psalm says, «Praise God for that.»

So, we praise Him in the sanctuary. We praise Him in the mighty firmament. And we praise Him for His works, which He continually does in our lives, especially considering what we’ve been through in the last many days in our 40 days of power, in our Greater Works conference, and in the days ahead. There’s so much to praise God for. And finally, it says to praise Him according to His excellent greatness. That means that the measure of praise we give to God must be equal to who He is. We look at God, we marvel at who He is, and we say, «Lord, because You’re so awesome, because You’re so powerful, because You are great, we will give You the praise.»

You can’t give God small praise. You can’t give Him little praise. You can’t give Him the praise that you give to a friend, or the praise that you give to a king, or the praise that you give to food, or the praise that you give to a book, or some other things because we praise all kinds of things. We praise footballers for their skill. You cannot praise footballers more than you praise God. You cannot praise food more than you praise God. You can’t even praise your spouse more than you praise God. Why? Because we praise Him according to His excellent greatness.

Excellent greatness means greatness that is beyond greatness, greatness that excels. And because God is this awesome God and His greatness excels, we praise Him. So let your praise be profuse. Let it be spontaneous. Let it be loud. Let it be exuberant as you thank God for what He has done for you in your life. Praise the Lord, and praise Him with all that He has given to you.

Let us pray. Say with me, «Heavenly Father, You are excellent in all of Your works. I praise and magnify Your name from deep within my soul. In Jesus' name, Amen. And amen.»
