Mensa Otabil - Hear the Word of the Lord (10/27/2025)
Welcome to day number seven of our 40 days of power. We trust the Lord is your strength and that we are growing from strength to strength. As you know, this week we are looking at guidance and God’s guidance for us during our 40 days of power. One of the important things we have to learn in terms of guidance is to hear the voice of God, to hear the word of God. So when God speaks to us, we can hear it, and we can be sure that this is truly God speaking to us. It is always important for us to pay attention to what God is saying to us and how the Holy Spirit is leading us in a time and season like this.
We are talking about how to hear the word of the Lord. Revelation chapter 2, verse 7: «He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.» What you pay attention to is very important, and that phrase «he who has an ear» is one that most of us use. «He who has an ear, let him hear.» But what does it mean? Does it simply mean that if you have a physical ear, then you must hear? At one level, it means that if you can hear naturally, you must also be able to hear spiritually.
When it says, «he who has an ear,» it really means " he who pays attention; let him hear.» When we use the phrase " lend me your ear,» we are not really saying to somebody, «Give your physical ear to me.» We mean, «Pay attention to what I’m saying.» So God is saying, «If you pay attention to me, you will hear me.» Having an ear means being in a mode where you are receptive to the voice of God. You must pay attention to Him, examine what you are hearing, and evaluate the impulses you feel within you. You are to match it with the word of God, ensuring that what you are sharing is truly God speaking to you.
To hear from God, we have to be in a mode of paying attention. We must lend Him our ear and say, as Samuel said, «Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.» In other words, I’m ready, Lord; I’m paying attention. Speak to me. If you have an ear, if you pay attention, God will speak to you. Secondly, he says that «he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying.» It’s very important. He who has an ear is not hearing what is being said on the radio or what has been said by friends around us. We are paying attention to what the Spirit of God is saying.
Many times, we pay attention, but we pay attention to the wrong voices. We pay attention to voices of ignorance, to voices of unbelief, and to voices that really take us away from the will of God. But if you are going to pay attention, pay attention to what the Spirit of God is saying. As we pray and as we consecrate ourselves to the Lord, the Spirit of God speaks to us in many ways. We must be able to recognize when that voice comes to us.
During this week, I pray that God will give you sensitivity to His Spirit, that you will make time in your prayer. Don’t just talk, talk, talk to God; have some moments of silence, some moments of quietness, and also hear what the Spirit is saying to you because God is speaking to you. In conclusion, you must lend Him your ear. Any time we hear God speaking to us, it agrees with Scripture. It is the revelation of God’s will; it is the revelation of God’s purpose.
For all the important decisions you will be making during this time, lend your ear to the Lord. Have an ear and let the Spirit of God speak to you. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for the instructions in Your word. I choose to obey all that You ask of me. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.
