Mensa Otabil - All Things Were Made
TOPICS: Word to Go

John chapter 1, verse 3: All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made. We learn from John that Jesus Christ, our Creator, the One who died for us to redeem us from sin, is also the Creator of all things. This is central to the Christian faith. Christianity is not just about going to church and participating in some rituals; it is not just about preaching or praying. It is about Jesus Christ-who He is. John gives us the centrality of who Christ is, and this is fundamental to the Christian faith. He says that all things were made through Him. Jesus was not made; He was not created. Instead, John says He is the Creator. And why does John have the audacity to say that Jesus is the Creator? Because he starts by saying Jesus is the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word is God.

Of course, when we read through the Bible, we see that all things were made by the Word of God. God created all things by His Word, and we see part of it in the Book of Genesis, where He says, «Let there be,» and there is. God makes things by His Word. So John says that because Christ is the Word, all things were made through Him. He is the King of creation; He is the Lord of creation. He is not a creature, but the Creator. It is important to know that because later we learn that Jesus, the Word, became flesh. Jesus dwelled among us, and many times we only see the humanity of Jesus Christ. John is saying no, no, no — before He became human, He pre-existed before time. He is the Word that was with God, which was later manifested.

All things were made through Him, including those who do not believe in Him, those who do not want to hear about Him, and those who don’t want to have anything to do with Him. Whether you love Him or not, all things were made through Him. Then he deepens this thought: «And without Him, nothing is made.» That means it is impossible for anything to exist outside of His permission, as a sort of His creative power. All of creation, the universe, the light-years of expansion, the ever-increasing growth of the universe-all of the things, all of the worlds, all of the planets, all of the suns, all of the black holes, and all of the supernovas-all of them could not have existed if He wasn’t the Word. He is the Word that creates, and outside of Him, there is nothing. He makes things; He brings things into being, and that is central to our Christian faith.

That is why we can also trust the same Jesus to make things work. We see throughout His life that when He came to the Earth, He could make things work. When people were sick, He could overturn the sickness. When the storm was misbehaving, the Creator could still it back to the way He wanted it to perform because all things were made through Him, and outside of Him, there is nothing. It is emptiness, but with Him, things come into being, and things hold their nature. We believe that, we affirm that, and we trust in that with all our being because Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the Word of God manifested-the Creator.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, all things were created by Your Word, and I know You will create a beautiful story with my life. In Jesus' name, amen and amen. I’ll catch you again tomorrow. I’m Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
