Mensa Otabil - We Trust In the Name of the Lord

Mensa Otabil - We Trust In the Name of the Lord
TOPICS: Word to Go, Trust

We are continuing the study of the 20th Psalm. I trust that it has been a blessing to you as we’ve learned how to intercede and how to pray for people and the kinds of things we should desire for God to do for them as we pray.

So, we look at our last study, which is in verse number seven: «Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.» This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible because it tells us about priorities and preferences. When people want to see a change in their lives or when people are going through difficulties, where do they go for help? What do they trust in? The passage sets out two different kinds of people and two different approaches to God. First, it talks about those who trust in chariots and in horses; we would say those who trust in human power.

You know, in those days there were no cars, no guns, no computers, and no iPads. The horses and chariots were the most advanced equipment they had for transportation. It says that there are people who trust in these, and it is good to have a great horse and a great chariot if you want to move. But safety, deliverance, or help must not be placed in them. As we all know, human strength fails, machines fail, equipment fails, and education fails. So, if all you have in life is your horses and your chariots-the things that you have built, the things that have been built by other people, technology, science, education- if that’s all you have and you rely on, then your life is not going to be as complete as God wants it to be. Those who trust in chariots and horses invariably get disappointed, either by the horses and chariots or by the people they trust in.

So, if you’re one of them, I trust that you will shift the center of gravity of your faith from things to God. The second part says, «We will remember the name of the Lord our God.» In other words, we will trust God, and that is the center of Christianity. We can use things; we can have things; we can acquire things, but we don’t trust them. Our trust, our faith, is in the Lord. We may go to church; we may have a good pastor. We thank God for their lives; we thank God for their ministry, but our trust must always be in the Lord. We must always remember the Lord, and I like how the passage puts it because it’s very easy for us to forget God when we are going through trials and difficulties. All we remember are the physical things and the promises that people gave to us, but we have to remember the Lord-remember His word, remember His faithfulness and His nature, remember His promises. It is in that place of trust in God that we see Him at work in our lives.

So, as you commit to interceding for people, as you commit to seeing God work-maybe for your children, as you’re praying for your children, or maybe you’re praying for your husband or your wife-remember that your trust must always be in the Lord. Some trust in horses, some trust in chariots, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. And as you remember the Lord, He also remembers you. It is in giving that we receive; it is in drawing nigh to Him that He draws nigh to us. As you remember the Lord, He will also remember you.

Well, next week, tomorrow, we start a new study, so let’s pray. Say with me: Heavenly Father, my trust is in You; I make my boast in You. Let Your glory be seen in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen and Amen. Well, I’ll catch you again tomorrow. I’m Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
