Well, we are in Psalm 40, and we’re looking at verse three. It says, «He has put a new song in my mouth-praise to our God. Many will see it and fear and will trust in the Lord.» God puts a new song in our mouth when He delivers us from the miry clay. Songs are an expression of what we feel. When you listen to songs on the radio or in the media, you can tell when people feel in love; they sing about love. When people are sad, they sing very teary songs. When people are mournful, they sing wonderful songs. When people are victorious, they sing triumphant songs.
So the song you sing is an expression of how you’re feeling. David, after God’s deliverance, says, «God put a new song in my mouth.» He celebrated his faith with a new song, not singing the same old songs. If you were sad and then became happy, you wouldn’t continue to sing sad songs; you would sing happy songs. If you were disappointed and singing songs of disappointment, and God comes through for you, you wouldn’t continue singing songs of disappointment. The problem with many of us is that even when God has delivered us, we sing songs of bondage. We sing songs of fear. We sing songs of doubt.
When God has answered us, we sing songs of desperation. But David says, «God has given me a new song.» Why? Because my situation has changed. God has heard me, and because He has heard me, my language, the theme of my heart, is going to be very different. The interesting thing is David credits the Lord with this song. He says, «The Lord has put a new song in my mouth.» In other words, I didn’t invent it myself; God did something for me and flooded my soul with a new song, with new faith, with new excitement, with new hope. Don’t live in bondage when God has set you free. Don’t sing about fear when God has given you deliverance. Your song must be new to correspond with what God has done for you.
The psalmist says that when I start singing this new song, many will see it and they will fear the Lord. That means they will respect the Lord; they will revere the Lord. So when we sing a new song, we advertise God; we make God known. David says many will see it, and they will trust in the Lord. You see, what God does in our lives is not only for our sake. God doesn’t answer our prayer just because of our need; He also answers our prayer because He wants to advertise Himself and His works to other people. We are His advertisers; we are the ones who go out and showcase God. We are the ones who tell the world about what God is doing. So your story, your victory, is a signboard of God’s goodness.
Think about it: you’ve taken time to pray; you' ve fasted. You’ve done so for 40 days. You cried to the Lord and you believe God heard you. So afterwards, how do you showcase yourself? How do you demonstrate your victory? You sing a new song; you talk about the goodness of the Lord; you talk about the mercy of the Lord; you talk about the victory of the Lord; you talk about all the good things God is doing for you. Your testimony changes, and people share about it. Even though they may not have seen the testimony manifested, they begin to honor God and trust Him, knowing that He who has done mighty things for you will do mighty things for them. So David was very confident that what God had done for him would soon manifest for all to see and embrace. He said, «I sing a new song, and many will see it.» They will see; they’re not seeing it now, but they will see it, and they will trust in the Lord.
I pray that God will use you in a similar way, that as your language changes, as your declaration changes, as your demeanor changes, many will see it, and they will also come and trust in the Lord. Let us pray. Say with me, «Heavenly Father, You are my song and deliverance. I will sing Your new song of praise to all the world. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.»
