We’re in the book of Exodus, chapter 13. We are looking at God’s instructions to Israel after He has delivered them from Egypt. Verse 3: «And Moses said to the people, 'Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by the strength of His hand, the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.'» It is so easy for us to forget, so easy for us to forget when God has delivered us. The instructions God has given to Israel are so important. He wants them to remember that His portion is His, and He wants them to remember the day of their deliverance.
You know, many times we celebrate days like birthdays and wedding anniversaries, but we forget to celebrate the days of God’s deliverance in other areas of our lives. So what is God saying? First, remember the day of your deliverance. Remember the day of your deliverance. For Israel, they had to remember this day after 430 years in bondage. God delivers them, and He says, «Remember the day of your deliverance.» For us as Christians, it’s important that we remember Christian celebrations in our lives, but more than everything else, we have to remember what God has done for us. We have to remember His deliverance in our lives; we have to remember His salvation. We have to remember all the good things that He has done for us.
Remember the day of your deliverance, and you have to remember the Lord who delivered you. Not only the day, but the Deliverer- you have to remember Him. That’s why, as Christians, we observe days of remembrance like Easter, Good Friday, and Christmas. They are not just celebrations for us to have fun, but for us to remember that Christ died for us, that Christ resurrected, that Christ came, and that He was born. So we keep the day of God’s deliverance and the Lord Himself in our memory, and that’s what God is teaching Israel.
Many times, God does so many things for us, and we promise, «Oh, we will serve Him all the days of our lives.» But the moment the deliverance comes and good things are happening to us, life has gotten better, we forget everything about God. But the Lord says, «Remember your deliverance. Remember the Lord Himself.» And thirdly, remember God’s covenant with you because He says, «On the day you were delivered, no leavened bread was to be eaten.» Remember that, because that symbol of eating unleavened bread is a reminder of the deliverance that God has given to you. Remember that the Lord Jesus Christ reenacted this with Himself when He instituted communion, and He says, «Do this in remembrance of Me.»
When we come before the Lord in communion, it’s not just another church ritual; it is a major remembrance of a major deliverance and a major salvation that God gave to us. So we go to church, we celebrate communion, and we remember that Jesus died; He shed His blood for us. He rose again from the dead, and now we have new life through Him. That is how, as Christians, we have our covenant. The Jews have their covenant in the Passover; we have our covenant with God through Christ Jesus in His death and resurrection. So He says, «Don’t forget that.» But beyond communion, it means that we have to keep things in our minds and our lives that always remind us of what God has done for us in delivering us, in helping us, and in giving us the victory.
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, You have done so much for me. Help me to never forget Your goodness to me. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.
