Psalm 62, verse 8: Trust Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. Selah. Trust in the Lord is both a humbling and a powerful concept-to just trust Him, to leave everything in God’s hands. It is humbling to trust God because it reminds us of our own incapacities. We trust God because we know we can’t handle everything, and there are limits to our strengths and to our efforts.
In this time, our world is just enamored with celebrating people’s strengths and calling on people’s strengths and acknowledging people’s strengths-so much so that even when we are weak, we don’t want to accept our weaknesses. If you don’t accept your weakness before men, at least before God you have to accept your weaknesses and trust Him to take care of you. The Lord wants us to trust Him as sheep trust the shepherd. He wants us to depend on Him; He wants us to trust Him with all our fears, with our worries, with all anxieties. In the passage, we are told to trust in the Lord at all times. God doesn’t want us to trust Him today and then tomorrow say, «Lord, no, no, no, I’ll trust myself. I’ll do it by myself.»
Many of us have a kind of yo-yo trust with God- one moment we trust Him; the next moment we don’t want to trust Him. One moment we have faith; the next moment we have doubt. One moment we think it is going to happen; the next moment we are so depressed we think nothing is going to happen. Trust the Lord at all times-in good times, in bad times, when you are up, when you are down. When we stop trusting the Lord, then the battles of life get tougher and tougher for us. So the question is: Will you trust the Lord even when the battle gets tough? Would you trust Him when things are changing and probably getting worse? We trust the Lord at all times.
If you’ve put it into God’s hands, leave it in God’s hands. If you’ve spoken to God about it, trust Him to fix it. If you believe God is on your side, believe it at all times. Don’t go in and out of your trust; stay in one place and trust. The passage also says that because we trust the Lord, we should pour out our hearts to Him. When we trust the Lord, we carry our burdens to Him. We go with Him and unload the things that we don’t tell anybody; we tell the Lord. That’s why I believe that prayer should always be very intimate. It should be personal, and you should be able to really express the depths of your heart to God. Instead of prayer being a format where you are just rattling off some words without any meaning, it should mean something deep in your heart.
So, pour your heart out to the Lord. And how are we able to do all of that? We’re able to do that when we accept that there are limits to our efforts and understanding. We don’t have it all; we can’t do it all; we don’t know it all. There are limits to what we can do, and that’s why we can trust God and pour our hearts to Him. We’re able to do that also when we trust that God has infinite wisdom, that He always has a way out of every situation. He knows something we don’t know; He has an angle to the situation that we don’t have. We trust Him that even when things are not going as well as we want, He has His hand on top of it. Trust the Lord at all times; trust Him with all your burdens; trust Him with your fears; pour out your heart on Him, and He will take good care of you. Trust Him.
Let’s pray. Say with me: Heavenly Father, You are my strength. Teach me to trust You even when I feel strong on my own. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.
