Mensa Otabil - I Will Pass Over You
TOPICS: Word to Go

Exodus chapter 12 verse 13: Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

God gave Israel a way out of destruction; He gave them a way out of the plague, the final plague that was about to hit the land of Egypt. The way out was for them to partake of the Passover feast and also apply the blood of the Passover lamb around their doors. If they did that, then they would be safe from destruction. Whenever there is destruction, God has a way of escape for His people, and the Bible says that no temptation will come to us without God giving us a way of escape. This was Israel’s way of escape, and the blood did several things for them.

The first thing the passage says is that the blood will be a sign for them. The people were supposed to mark their doors with the blood, so the blood would be the mark; it would be the indication that in this household there are people protected. In this household, there are faithful people who serve God, who obey God, who honor Him, and so the blood was the indication that in the household there are people of faith. It’s always important to know that God knows how to mark out His own, and may He mark you out for deliverance this year.

Then the second thing is that the blood is a covering. Wherever the people were, they had to stay indoors, and two things had to happen indoors. First, they had to be indoors to eat of the Passover meal; that was very important as it was a covenant with God. Secondly, they had to be indoors in a house that was marked by the blood. So, if you were a Jew and you refused to partake of the Passover meal and went outside of the house, you would not be protected. Conversely, if you were an Egyptian and you truly believed in God and said, «Well, I’m an Egyptian, but I choose to be on God’s side,» and you went to a Jewish home, partook of the meal, and stayed in a house that was covered by the blood, then you would be delivered. The important thing is not so much about you but about God’s deliverance and the conditions under which we enjoy God’s deliverance.

You know, many times we think we can live our lives any way we want and still enjoy God’s blessing; it doesn’t work that way. There are rules and regulations, and this is what God says: the blood is a covering for them. It is possible, you know, to be part of a Christian household; your father may be a pastor or a priest, and still not be under God’s covering. You have to choose to follow the God that your father or your parents worship. It’s always important to take the step to be under the covering of the blood of Jesus.

Thirdly, the blood was their deliverance. Everyone who stayed in the blood-marked house was protected, and in the New Testament, God shows us the bigger picture that Jesus Christ is the Lamb that has been slain, and His blood is our covering. Our deliverance and salvation come through His blood, and when people come into Christ, they are like the Israelites hiding in their homes with the blood covering them. When we come into Christ, He’s our covering; He’s our salvation; He is the one who enables us to have a relationship with God. If you’re not in Christ, the safest place to be on earth is in Christ Jesus, and in Him, every plague passes over you.

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the mark of the blood of Jesus that preserves me from destruction. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.
