Mensa Otabil - God's Peace Keeps Us Safe
TOPICS: Word to Go

Well, it’s been a great week as we’ve talked about God’s peace and trusting Him to keep our minds and our hearts settled in Him while we’re dealing with all the difficulties that life throws at all of us. So let’s conclude with Psalm 4, verse 8: «I will both lie down in peace and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.»

I just love this Psalm and the assurance it gives us about life. You know, one of the things that happens when there is so much trouble around you is you become sleepless. You’re not able to sleep, especially when there’s so much on your mind and you’re thinking about so many things. You just stay awake through the night, and sometimes your eyes are open at odd hours. Sometimes you get panic attacks, but the psalmist brings us back to the center of our lives and just anchors us back in the Lord, because He makes us dwell in safety. God’s peace helps us to sleep. If you are in a sleepless mode, I pray that today God will give you sleep and deliverance from every sleeplessness, nightmares, and disturbed sleep because He gives His beloved sleep.

There are some Christians who actually believe that they must stay awake at certain times in the night to pray because there are evil spirits, and they must stand and fight those evil spirits. The truth of it is that He who watches us neither slumbers nor sleeps. God doesn’t slumber nor sleep. Why? Because He gives His beloved sleep. God watches over us. You don’t stay awake to watch over yourself.

How are you going to do that? How are you going to fight demons in the night because you don’t think God can watch over you? It’s an expression of doubt in God’s goodness rather than faith in Him. If you have faith in Him, you will go to bed and trust Him to keep you safe throughout the night until the coming morning. So God gives us sleep, and whatever burden you’re carrying, may the Lord give you sleep. May you go to bed, hit the bed, and sleep your full hours, waking up refreshed and strong in the Lord because God gives us sleep. Sleeping is a blessing from God, and I’m not talking about the sleep of the lazy, where you do nothing and just sleep and sleep and sleep. No, I’m talking about having rest in the Lord, confident that God has got you and He’ll take care of you.

May the Lord give each one of us sleep. The psalmist also says that God keeps us safe, and that’s why we can rest; that’s why we can unburden ourselves. That’s why we can put all our cares upon Him, because He cares for us. He keeps us safe; He keeps us provided for. He provides our needs; He gives us our daily bread because He is our God. He is the one we trust in. So, as you enter a new week, may the Lord give you rest in your soul. May the Lord give you peace of mind. May the Lord give you sleep, good sleep. May you face the world not as a wicked person but as a strong person, refreshed and energized to face every new day. That is the blessing God gives to His children, and I believe it will be the blessing that He gives to you.

As we get ready to enter a new week, let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your peace that keeps me safe. I will lie down in peace and rise in safety. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.
