Mensa Otabil - I Will Be Your God
TOPICS: Word to Go

Exodus Chapter 6, Verses 7 and 8: I will take you as my people, and I’ll be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a heritage. I am the Lord. It’s such a powerful moment between God and Moses, and God is speaking with emphasis, emphasizing what He’s going to do. Remember in verse 6, which we looked at yesterday, He says, «I will bring you out, I will rescue you, I will redeem you.»

Now He’s continuing and adding four more things He says He will do. In total, there are seven things God is going to do. I will do it; I will. This is God’s word, and it carries His weight, His majesty, His power. This is what He’s going to do. He says, «Go tell Israel I will do these things,» and they don’t have to doubt Him. But you know, the children of Israel had a way of doubting God every step of the way. When God says, «I will,» your doubt cannot stop Him; He will still do it because it is His will, it is His purpose, and it will stand.

So, four things He says He will do: I will take you as My people. Israel will no longer be Pharaoh’s people. He says, «You will be My people; you will be identified with Me, and I will be identified with you.» That’s the first thing God says He’s going to do in this verse: «You will be My people; I’ll take you as My people.»

Secondly, He says, «I will be your God.» I’ll have a spiritual relationship with you. Up until this time, Israel has been worshiping the gods of the Egyptians. They have been made to bow to these gods. God says, «When I take you as My people, you have to put away the gods of the Egyptians, and I’m going to be your only God-the one God, the God of your fathers, who has visited you, who has redeemed you. I will be your God.» This new nation is going to be God’s nation.

The third thing He says here is, «I will bring you into the land,» and this is very heavy because this is the promise that God gave 600 years earlier to Abraham. God says, «I will bring you to the land.» Now remember, bringing them to the land, from the time He’s speaking to them, there are going to be many things happening, but God doesn’t tell them about all the things going to happen. He doesn’t tell them about the 40 years in the wilderness or the Red Sea. All He said is, «I will do it.» So when you confront these things, remember they are only temporary obstacles, but in the end, I will bring you to the land. Nothing will stop God from bringing them to the land. Finally, He says, «I will give you the land.» I will not just bring you there; I will give it to you.

Now, I want you to notice something: when God says He’s going to do something, He doesn’t tell us what we will be confronted with in the interim. He knows that there will be fights to be fought in the promised land, and He knows the wilderness will be a trial, but He says that is nothing because I’m going to do it anyway. That’s how God speaks to us; He knows the difficulties we go through, He knows our trials, and He knows the temptations, but He also knows the end. God always pronounces the end: I will do it.

Today, I want you to be assured that if God says He will do it, He will do it. You may say, «But I’m going through the wilderness.» He will do it. «I’m facing a Red Sea.» He will do it. «Pharaoh says he’s not going to let me go.» God will do it. Don’t allow the temporary setbacks to make you doubt what God says He will do.

Let’s pray. Say with me: Heavenly Father, You are my God, and I am Your child. I know You will do what You say You will do. In Jesus' name, Amen and Amen. Well, I’ll catch you again tomorrow. I’m Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
