Mensa Otabil - Jehovah Shalom
TOPICS: Word to Go, Names of God

This is the final installment in our teaching on the names of God. We’ve done it over two weeks. We started with the names of God that begin with «L,» and now we have addressed the names of God that start with «Jehovah.» We’ve discussed several of the names of God, and I hope they have blessed you because anytime you think about the names of God, you consider how to relate to Him and how God expresses Himself to you. Our prayers must always be based on what God has revealed about Himself, not on what we think we know about Him, but on what He has revealed about Himself.

Today, we present the last name we will discuss for this time, which is Jehovah Shalom. We get this from Judges chapter 6, verses 23 and 24. Then the Lord said to him, «Peace be with you. Do not fear; you shall not die.» So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it «The Lord is Peace.» To this day, it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. The Lord is peace, or the Lord is our peace, Jehovah Shalom. Of course, we know that «shalom» means peace, and that is the name that Gideon gave to the altar he built when the angel of the Lord came to deliver a message about orders to go and fight the Midianites.

Isn’t it interesting that the angel of the Lord spoke to Gideon about war, yet Gideon named the altar «Peace»? Why is it that he received a message to go to war but called the altar he built to commemorate that statement «Peace»? The Lord is our peace. Gideon called the place «The Lord is our peace.» If you look at the beginning of the verse, the angel of the Lord said to him, «Peace be with you,» because he was afraid that after he had seen God, he would die. The angel said, «Hey, peace! Rest! Take it easy; you’re not going to die.» So because God extended peace to him, he built the altar of the Lord to commemorate that the Lord is peace.

So what does Jehovah Shalom mean? The Lord is peace. What does it mean in the context of this passage? First, it means that God’s peace removes our fears. That is what the angel of the Lord said to Gideon: «Don’t be afraid.» The peace of the Lord removes our fear, and when God gives us peace, even in the midst of war, we are not afraid. Even when we’ve been attacked, we are not afraid because the peace of God removes all our fears. That is the first thing you should know about the peace of God.

Second, God’s peace offers us life. The Lord said to Gideon, «Do not fear; you shall not die.» This does not mean he would never die, but rather that he would not die at that time, not in the presence of the Lord and not during the war that was going to ensue. He was going to overcome. The Lord gives us life not just to stay alive, but His life gives us wholeness and wellness of being. So when God says, «I give you life,» or «life to you,» it is not just so that you exist for a long time but to ensure that you have a good life, enjoy wholeness, and that things go well for you. So the peace of God removes fear from us. The peace of God offers life.

The third thing about the peace of God is that the peace of God makes us winners. That’s what Gideon experienced because Gideon went to war against the Midianites. The Midianites had an army of 135,000 armed men-135,000 soldiers. Gideon only went in with 300. Three hundred against 135,000 is a no-brainer; you can’t win. Yet Gideon won because the peace of God gives us victory. So whatever battle we are in, the peace of God ensures that we go in and come out victorious. The Lord will subdue everything that troubles your peace, everything that takes your wellbeing from you, everything that takes wholeness from you. May the Lord give you peace all around you.

This is how we end our teaching on the names of God. I trust it has been a blessing to you. Take time to go through the YouTube and listen to what we’ve taught all over again, and let it become part of your own knowledge. I’ve put a lot of information out there that you can really feed on to build your life as a Christian. So take time to revisit all of it.

Let’s pray. Say with me, «Heavenly Father, You are my peace. Thank You for the blessings of life, health, and prosperity. In Jesus' name, Amen and amen.» I’ll catch you again tomorrow as we start a new series. I am Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
