Waiting on the Lord is based on our confidence in Him. We wait on Him because we trust Him. Without confidence in the Lord, without hoping in the Lord, we can’t wait on Him. Sometimes in life, you find yourself in trouble and you want God to deliver you; you want help to come, and it seems the help is not coming. When help is not forthcoming or you don’t see it, how do you handle it? How do you deal with an expectation for deliverance that is not happening?
In the book of Lamentations, chapter 3, verses 24 to 26, it says, «The Lord is my portion,» says my soul; «therefore, I hope in Him.» The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. The word «salvation» there can also be translated as «deliverance» or «help» from the Lord. It is good that we learn to wait for God’s deliverance.
If you look at verse 24, it starts by saying, «The Lord is my portion,» and I like that phrase. «The Lord is my portion» is a statement of choice; it means that I have chosen the Lord. Others have chosen other things as their portion. Some have chosen money, others worldly goods, while some have chosen their family pedigree as their portion. That is what they have chosen as their deliverance, but we choose the Lord. He is our portion; when we went out, that is the selection we made. We made God our portion, and those who choose God as their portion must learn to keep their hope in Him. That is what you have chosen. Some choose chariots, some choose horses, but the Lord is your portion. The Lord is the one you have chosen, and it is good that we hold on to Him and trust Him for our deliverance.
When lies are told about you, when people plan your destruction, when evil seems to triumph over you, choose the Lord because He is your portion and trust in Him for your deliverance. He will deliver you. He will deliver you from the fire that has been lit to burn you, as He did for the three Hebrew boys. The Lord is your portion; hope in Him, wait on Him, and He will deliver you. He will deliver you from the wild beasts that have been loosed upon you to devour and destroy you. He will shut their mouths, as He did for Daniel. The storm may seem to rise above you, and you may feel like you are about to sink, but the Lord is your portion.
As He lifted Peter from the raging storm, He will lift you up. So when we wait on God as our deliverance, when we wait on Him as our portion, we keep our confidence in Him. We don’t choose the Lord as our portion one moment and then, when life gets tough, choose something else. Sometimes, we become so desperate. People are seeking help and deliverance, looking for promotion, and they run helter-skelter, choosing different portions. Just settle in your heart; the Lord is your portion. Wait on Him; He will deliver you. You will come out of this with a testimony. I am Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
