Mensa Otabil - God is a Covenant Keeper

Mensa Otabil - God is a Covenant Keeper
TOPICS: Word to Go, Covenant

Well, welcome to day number 12 of our 40 days of power. Today, we are looking at one of the essential attributes of God—that He is a covenant keeper, a covenant-keeping God. Deuteronomy chapter 7, verse 9: «Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.» God’s relationship with us and with people is a covenant relationship. When we talk about covenant from a biblical point of view, it’s not just an agreement or a contract, but it is a divine relationship that God enters into with different groups of people. The way we see Him is always based on the covenant we have with Him, and the way He relates to us is based on the kind of covenant we share with Him.

In the Old Testament, He had a covenant with people primarily with the children of Israel on Mount Sinai. The basis of that covenant was their obedience to His laws and rules; thus, the law was very important in that covenant. In the New Testament, He has established a new covenant with us that was enacted on the cross when Jesus died and fulfilled in heaven when Jesus ascended. In that covenant, the basis is not our obedience to the law of God, but the obedience of Christ—what Christ has done for us, His death, His obedience, His life, and His faithfulness is the foundation of that covenant.

But whether under the Old Covenant or the New Covenant, one thing is clear: God is a covenant-keeping God; He does not break covenants. The passage states that He is faithful as part of His covenant-keeping nature. He is dependable; He’s devoted to the covenant promises He makes. So when He makes a promise under any covenant, He is devoted to it and faithful to it. The second statement says that God is merciful; it’s part of His covenant relationship. He is righteous, gracious, and compassionate, which practically means that even in a covenant, God understands our limitations. We are not on equal footing with Him, so He is faithful when we are faithless, merciful when we break some of the demands of His covenant. His mercy reaches out to us as part of His covenant nature.

This means that when we engage with God, He’s not expecting us to be absolutely perfect and faultless in every way. It’s a great aspiration to be perfect and faultless, but the mercy of God is part of His covenant nature. We can trust that because of His covenant with us, He will be faithful to us, merciful to us, dependable, and will fulfill what He has promised. Today, I want you to find assurance in the fact that you are in a relationship with a covenant-keeping God. What He has said He would do for you, He will do. Trust in His nature, trust in His faithfulness, trust in His mercy, and trust that His covenant will become real.

Why don’t we share a word of prayer together? Say with me: «Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are a covenant-keeping God. Your mercy towards me is endless, and I depend on You for the fulfillment of the New Covenant in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.»

Well, my friend, it’s great to have had this fellowship with you around God’s Word. Have a great day, and Pastor Mensa Otabil, Shalom—peace and life to you.
