Welcome to day number 30 of our 40 days of power. We have 10 more days to go, and we thank God for His grace and mercy that have carried us up to this time. Today we are talking about faith for greater works. Our text is from John’s Gospel, chapter 14, verse 12: «Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will also do; and greater works than these he will do because I go to My Father.»
«Greater works"—that is a very strong statement. Jesus showed us something about His nature that is very inspiring. Most leaders don’t want their followers to be like them or to reach their level, but Jesus said that His followers would do what He did and also promised that they would do more than what He did. This is a crucial indication of His sense of security in who He is.
Of course, there are things that Jesus did that no follower can do; no follower can die for the sins of the world, nor will any follower be the Savior or Redeemer of the world; that is unique to Jesus. However, there are things He did that we can also do. The statement Jesus made was in reference to a question that one of His disciples, Philip, asked. When Jesus said He was going to the Father, Philip said, «Show us the Father.» Jesus then teaches and says it’s good that He goes to the Father because when He goes to Him, the disciples will be empowered to do what He does and greater works than these.
When Jesus talks about the works that He did, what are those works? He preached the gospel, He served people, and He demonstrated the power and love of God. These are the works of Jesus Christ: the preaching of the gospel for the deliverance of people from captivity, showing the love of God, and showing the power of God. These are the works that He said we would do, and then He said we would do greater than these.
What does that mean? Well, during the life of Jesus, His ministry was within a certain sphere, mostly in Galilee up to Jerusalem, and it didn’t go beyond that; He didn’t go to foreign countries; He just stayed within Judea. Jesus is saying that when He goes, His disciples would do greater works. One of the ways we do greater works than Jesus is that we go to places He never went. Jesus never preached on television; I am preaching on television. He never had a Facebook account; I have a Facebook account. I am doing His work but in a greater way than He did it. There are many ways we can accomplish the greater works of God in our lives, and I pray that in these 40 days of power, one of the things that will manifest is that you will do greater works for the glory of God.
In the name of Jesus, God is about to use you in unusual ways. Get ready for it because greater works are about to manifest in your life. Why don’t we share a word of prayer together? Say with me: «Heavenly Father, thank You for the anointing to do the works of Jesus. I take my place to do greater works for the kingdom of God. In Jesus' name, Amen and Amen.» Well, have a great day. I’m Pastor Mensa Otabil. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
