Welcome to day number 27 of our 40 days of power. Today we are looking at facing the future in faith, and our text is from Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 6, verse 34: «Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.»
The question is, how do we face the future as Christians, especially considering how turbulent this year has been? How do we face the rest of 2020? Is there hope for tomorrow after all the disruptions we have encountered this year? When you look at everything that has happened, it’s very easy to worry. It’s very easy to look at life today and wonder if there will be a better tomorrow.
The reason we worry about tomorrow is that we have no control over it; it’s uncertain and represents the future. We have never been there before, and we don’t know what it will throw at us. When we consider the unpredictable nature of the future, we can become quite anxious. Jesus tells us not to worry about tomorrow. It’s interesting that he chose tomorrow as the time we shouldn’t be worried about.
Before Jesus talked about not worrying about tomorrow, he mentioned concerns such as what to eat or drink and what to wear. He instructs us not to worry about these necessary things, assuring us that the Father knows we need them. He points to the lilies of the field and the birds of the air, stating they don’t toil or spin fabric, yet God takes care of them. They are well-attired and fed. So God says, look at what He does for the birds and lilies, and trust Him to take care of you.
Jesus did not mean that we shouldn’t plan or think about the future, but we shouldn’t be anxious. We shouldn’t fear the future to the point where we no longer trust God. He says, don’t worry about tomorrow. Today, many people are worried about COVID. They’re concerned whether businesses will recover and whether they will be able to hold their weddings at the right time, along with all the associated details. God says, don’t worry about tomorrow; He’ll take care of tomorrow. Trust Him for today; His grace is sufficient for us today.
I want to encourage you that tomorrow is in God’s hands. He is the pilot of tomorrow, the navigator of tomorrow; He instigates tomorrow. He tells you to relax about it. Accept each day as a gift from Him, each day as a present, and open each day with faith, expectation, and anticipation that His goodness and mercy will follow you, making the day good for you. So God will take care of tomorrow; trust Him and believe in Him, and it will be well for you.
Let’s share a word of prayer as we reflect on God’s grace to care for tomorrow. Say with me: Heavenly Father, I know that You are the Lord of my past, present, and future. I trust You to take care of me today, and I’m confident You will take care of me tomorrow. I have confidence in Your supply for every need I have, in Jesus' name. Amen and amen. If you really trust that, don’t worry—trust the Lord. Shalom, peace, and life to you.
