The man is spending the rest of his life in prison after being implicated in a crime committed by his friend; his error was choosing for a friend, a young man with a terrible anger problem. When his friend snapped while he was present, he got caught up in the fallout and his life was ruined. Well that's fortunately something that only rarely happens.
Solomon gives some very good advice, Proverbs 22:24, it says, "Make no friendship with an angry man and with a furious man do not go".
A person is often defined by the company they keep and one person's character flaws or bad decisions can often have a flow-on effect. It's better to choose your friends wisely, if they're angry, dishonest, violent, you're better off without them. Don't let someone else's squandered life make a mess of your life.
