John Bradshaw - The Commandment With Promise
In Ephesians 6, after urging children to obey their parents, Paul says, "'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise". So what's that promise? Back at Sinai, God said, "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth".
While long life often has a lot to do with good genes or a healthy lifestyle, God promised His people long life as a consequence of honoring their parents. The people who brought you into the world are surely deserving of honor, of respect, of attention and of seeing you live in a way that reflects well upon them.
There's a promise connected with the Commandment designed especially to strengthen the family and thereby strengthen society. It's clearly important to God that we honor our parents; maybe it's time to make that phone call or send that card. I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written.
