John Bevere - Would You like to Be a Friend of God?
TOPICS: The Awe of Go

We have another version of the scripture that says friendship with the Lord is for those who fear Him. Okay, you’ve completed chapter 32; now we’re in what I like to call the exciting chapters, where we really dive into experiencing intimacy with God. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalm 25:14: «The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.» «Secret» should actually be plural; it’s the secrets of the Lord. Now we know we don’t share secrets with just anybody or any acquaintance; we share our secrets with our intimate, close friends. God is saying that my intimate close friends are those with whom I share my secrets.

So we have another version of the scripture that says friendship with the Lord is for those who fear Him. You can see that what opens the door to friendship with God is the holy fear of God; that’s why this message is so important. I mean, let’s face it. True life, if you really love God, is when you enter into an intimate friendship relationship with Him. What opens the door to it? It is the holy fear of God. If you look at Abraham, he was called the friend of God. Why is that? Because when Abraham was old, God asked him one night to sacrifice Isaac. He had waited 25 years for Isaac and had bonded deeply with him, as God said, «Your son whom you love.»

Obviously, a lot of people believe Isaac was either 13 or 33 years old; I don’t know which one. But I do know that there had been enough time for Abraham to deeply love this son. Not only had he waited for the son, but he had also bonded with him. Then God said to sacrifice him. We see in the Bible that early the next morning, Abraham was on his way. God gave him this three-day journey—why? To think it over. It’s maybe a little easier when you hear the booming voice of God the night before, but what about three days later? Three days later, when you’re looking at the mountain where you are going to put the most important person or thing to death in your life just because God said to do it and didn’t give you a reason?

I can’t even imagine the emotions going through Abraham as he and Isaac walked up that mountain to build that altar. Then he finally tied Isaac and raised that knife when the angel stopped him and said, «Abraham, stop! Now I know you fear God.» How did the angel know that Abraham feared God? He obeyed instantly; he obeyed when it didn’t make sense; he obeyed when he didn’t see a reason; he obeyed when it hurt; and he obeyed to completion. That’s when God opened his eyes, and he saw the ram in the thicket. He cried out, «Jehovah Jireh.» God revealed a facet of His personality that no one had ever known before. If you look at it, a lot of you know me as John Bevere, the author and speaker.

Now, if you’re watching these videos, there’s a lady who knows me as John Bevere, Dad. She knows me as John Bevere, husband. She knows me as John Bevere, athlete. She knows me as John Bevere, lover. None of you will ever know me as John Bevere, lover. That is a facet of my personality that is only reserved for Lisa, because she’s the closest person to me on this earth. God revealed a facet of His personality to Abraham that nobody had ever known because he was His friend. I want to encourage you: there is such intimacy available to you with God. He’s calling you in, and the way to enter that door of intimacy is no other way than through the holy fear of God.
