So the question is not what is your value to other human beings; the real question is, what is your value to God? Okay, guys, you have just read chapter 8. We’re in a brand-new section, and we are beginning our journey now in our second week of this book. Let’s go deeper into what our value is to God. Now, I’m talking about us as individuals; I’m not discussing us as a group, just us as individuals. So I want you to listen carefully right now. I am talking about your value.
Now let’s talk about value. Whenever we purchase something, we assign a value to it. My second-born son is in the sports memorabilia business, and I am in awe of what people pay for these items that athletes have used, whether it’s a jersey, a ball, a helmet, or shoes. My son went to an auction and wanted to get a Bill Russell jersey that he wore in the championship game of the NBA playoffs back in the '60s. He was hoping to get it for $400,000, but it went for $1.4 million. That person assigned the value of $1.4 million to Bill Russell’s jersey. To me, if I were buying it, I don’t think I would have paid over $100 or $200 for anything, regardless of whether it was Michael Jordan or Tom Brady; it’s just not that valuable to me.
So, if you look at value, it differs greatly. If you examine the value of a human being, that is what we are trying to identify here; it varies widely. There are people who get married, and the value of their spouse is something you can’t put a price tag on. Yet, there are others who reduce the value of a human being down to that of a prostitute. There are also people who place no value on their child and take the life of their child in their own womb. The value of that child meant nothing to them.
So the question is not what is your value to other human beings; the real question is, what is your value to God? Jesus, who is God manifest in the flesh, makes a statement: He said, «What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?» Jesus is saying that if you give your soul, your life, in exchange for all the valuable items in the world, you’re making an unprofitable deal.
So the question becomes, what is our value? Well, for God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God gave Jesus to pay a ransom for us. The scripture says, «God bought you at a high price.» The price He paid was the life of Jesus Christ Himself. What I love about this is that there is nothing more valuable to God in the entire universe than Jesus Himself. Yet, God saw your value as equal to that of Jesus, and that is why God gave Him. You would never give something of greater value for something of less value. For example, if a home is appraised at $200,000, you’re not going to give $400,000 for it because it’s appraised at $200,000. God’s appraisal of you was the value of Jesus.
Now I have proof; I have proof because Jesus made this statement. He said in John 17:20, «I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me because of these disciples' testimony,» which includes you and me. Well, what does He say about us? He said in verse 23, «Father, show them, show you and me, that you love them as much as you love me.» Did you hear that? Jesus actually prayed, and He won’t pray an incorrect prayer. God revealed to them that He loves you as an individual as much as He loves Jesus.
So there you have it. What is your value? Your true value is that God values you the same as He values Jesus Christ. That is amazing and shows your great worth to Him.
