Okay, now the scenario: you have a big field, like we're talking 10 miles, and in this field, there are landmines that will blow you up. Not only are there hidden landmines, but there's quicksand, poisonous plants, and sinkholes scattered throughout this field. You have to travel from one end of that field to the other, but someone gives you a map. And you know what that map does? It shows you where every sinkhole is, where every quicksand pit is, and where every landmine is. How are you going to handle that map? Are you going to sit there and say, "Oh, okay, I'm really busy; I have to get on the journey. I'll put it in there and read it when I need it"? No. They're going to carry you out in a body bag.
Well, let me just casually look at it real quick, and then I'll start my journey. I'll use it for casual reading. What are you going to do? Come on, do I need to be more explicit? You are going to look at that map and study it, and then you're going to put it in a better place than your water bottle. I mean, it is right there, and you're going to watch every step on this map that you take, amen? And you're going to get across.
All right, well, here's the deal: you are in a landmine field; it's called this world, and God has given us this book. Men have shed their blood; people have died to get it into our hands so that we, His people, would have something the Holy Spirit can use to show us the plot, the direction, and what steps to take so we don't fall into a sinkhole, we don't drown in a quicksand pit, and we don't get blown up by a landmine, because we have to get across. And Jesus says, "To him who overcomes," that's the person who gets across, and it's not the partial counsel of God; no, it's the whole counsel of God.
